Do Luv's Diapers Cause Diaper Rash??

Luvs used to be my favorite brand of diaper. I sang their praises to all my mommy friends and felt like I was getting the best bang for my buck. Then something changed. With a purchase of a new box of Luvs diapers Trevor developed a nasty looking rash around the inside of his legs where the leakguard meets the skin. It took me awhile to make the connection, meanwhile I tried everything to get rid of it. NOTHING would touch it. When I finally realized the problem might be the diapers, I switched to Pampers and within one day in the new diapers the rash was almost completely gone. I waited about a week and put one of the Luvs diapers back on him and by the next diaper change the rash was back. At the time I chalked it up to Trevor developing some sort of sensitivity to an ingredient in the diapers, but then I found this post on Baby Cheapskate:

Luvs Not as Loveable?

Apparently I'm not the only one. My good friend Laura experienced the same strange phenomenon with her little boy. Prompted by the response from Luvs in the post above, I decided I would write and let Luvs know what was going on and I received this canned response that everyone else seems to be getting as well:

"I'm sorry about your child's recent experience, Keysha.

Our diapers are thoroughly evaluated to make sure they're safe for a baby's sensitive skin. In fact, they're hypoallergenic.

Some factors that can contribute to the onset of diaper rash are diet, diarrhea, teething, the use of antibiotics, and upset stomach. Taking all of these things into consideration, it's hard to pinpoint the cause of your child's skin irritation. If your baby's condition doesn't improve, you may want to speak with your pediatrician.

We appreciate your bringing this matter to our attention, and I'm forwarding your report to our Health & Safety Group. I'm also following up with you by postal mail. Please allow 2-3 weeks for delivery.

Thanks again for getting in touch."

Um, yeah. This child has never had a diaper rash before, and I KNOW for a fact it was the diapers because I double checked after the rash went away.

Diet? At the time only breastmilk which is actually a great CURE for diaper rash
Diarrhea? Nope.
Teething? He wasn't then
Antibiotics? Never had any in his life
Upset Stomach? Not hardly
Luvs Diapers? YES!

There I pinpointed it. *rolls eyes*

I'm appalled that this is the best they can do when so many people are having the exact same problem. Then to imply that a Mother couldn't possibly have any clue what is causing her child's diaper rash is a sure way to turn away customers. You can keep your coupons Luvs, I'll never use your diapers again.

If you, or someone you know, have had the same problem with Luvs please contact them. Apparently you'll only get a canned response and some coupons for more diaper rashes, but they will never look into the problem until enough people get on their case. While you're at it, encourage them to employ more useful customer service.

*Trevor is 6 months, 1 week and 2 days old*

I am having the same experience. But my daughter is 1 year 10 months. I use Luv's size 3, and she gets a nasty rash on her inner thighs and her stomach now. I think I will switch to Pampers. Thank you so much, because I took her to the doctors they told me it was a "moisture rash" which I don't believe. I keep her diaper dry and she still gets it. It's until I get her out of the diapers she is fine. Thanks again.

Hi, I have a two year old who woke up with a terrible diaper rash after using Luvs ultra absorbent leakguards diapers size 4; we usually use Parents choice from Wal-mart; they are cheap and great; he has never ever woke up with diaper rash from the Parents choice diapers. I WIL NEVER EVER EVER EVER USE LUVS DIAPERS AGAIN. THEY SHOULD BE ASHAME OF THEMSELVES FOR SELLING THIS PRODUCT. I URGE ALL MOTHERS/FATHERS ECT. TO NOT USE LUVS. They need to do more research and testing there is something wrong with those diapers, I have four children ages from 23yrs. old; 10yrs. old; 7yrs. old and my 2yr. old. So, I know its not what I am doing..... Its those Luvs diapers; something missing that keeps the moisture away from the skin or some chemical in them that is causing a severe allergic reaction to there skin, hence causing severe diaper rash or rash. My child is 21 months old and I am experiencing the same thing with the diaper rash using Luvs diapers. We are also using a size 4 diaper. I too went to the doctor and they said it was a moisture rash and I change the diaper frequently! I just switched to Huggies Little Movers because of Pampers latest recall I was not sure if I should go back to Pampers. So we shall see if switching diapers clears up the rash! I am so convinced that it is the Luvs diapers because the rash started going away after just the first new Huggies diaper. I am not sure if it is a chemical or if the Luvs diaper does not block the wetness from the skin to help keep them dry.

But the rash began when i put her in luvs size 4 diapers.I thought their was something wrong with her diet. But then i read your blog. So i went out and bought Pampers. Within 2 days I could already tell a huge difference. I will never use Luvs again! thanks for you advice.

Yup, ditto here. My daughter just got a real ugly rash on her bottom.....she's 20 mos. old and in a size 3 Luv's. I'll have her in cloth diapers until it goes away. Thanks for the post.

OK really?? my son is 10 months and has NEVER had a diaper rash until one day last week, and now suddenly again this morning... after i ran out of his regular diapers (naty babycare) and put him in my daughter's size 4 luv's. can it really be that?? the poor guy is in a lot of pain, and if the diapers have caused this i'm going to be PISSED. and clearly never buy luvs again. thank you for this post and for the supporting comments.

We too are having problems now with the Luvs. They seemed to be fine for several months but they changed the design (and who knows what else) and we are also now in a size 4 and noticed that our little girl could not get rid of this rash on her legs where the diaper is. Tried Pampers and could immediately see improvement. I will definitely be letting them know.

I too am going through the same thing. In the begining I used the pamper swaddlers, then moved on the the huggies little movers. Money started to get tight so we switched to the Up & Up brand by Target. The Target brand work fine, but I kind felt guilty. I saw the Luvs were a reasonable price (for a name brand), so I purchased them {size 3}. I didn't make the connection at first because we just started her on solids. So, I wasn't sure if she was having a reaction to something she was eating. But was constantly getting this bright red rash on her outter vagina area, it's so bad her skin is raw and has welts down there. I've been trying everything, Desitine, A&D ointment, Triple Paste, it would start to clear up, then bang! it was back again. I was starting to feel helpless, then a co-worker told me that she had a problem with Luv's on her daughter. So tonight we are going to the doctors, and switching diapers. I am hoping I have the same success as the rest of you. If it does clear I up, and I come to the same conculsion, that it's the LUvs, I will certainly contact them on give them an earful about my little girls pain and discomfort!

This is so strange I looked up irritation due to luvs diapers and it isn't just me with this problem . My baby broke out in hives twice and had a horrible rash looked like a yeast r eczema rash on her inside thigh . Luvs obviously changed something n their diapers because they were once my favorite brand and never had a problem til now

My baby boy is getting slight irritation, and I think it may be due to Luvs, but I'm not sure. It doesn't seem bad, but I'm really keeping my eye on it and hopefully it's nothing

I have a special needs child who sees her pediatrician often. This is the second time I've seen this bright red rash that covers her entire diaper area. Previously we thought it might be due to UTI, but this time, she's clear of it, and even though she's been on antibiotics for two weeks, this rash did not look like yeast to our pediatrician. She didn't know what it was except that it was definitely connected to her diaper area. At first she asked if I had changed anything, bought new diapers or changed soap. The only thing I did do was buy a new box of size 3 Luvs.

Looking at it tonight, she's itching and developed hives. The only areas it starts to get clear a bit is where I put on thick petroleum-based cream, but everything that gets exposed to the diaper, clear up her back, gets red and itchy. I noticed that when I remove the diaper and keep it away a bit, it simmers down. Tonight I applied a topical antihistamine. If that reduces the redness and hives, it must be an allergic reaction.

I have seven children and have always used Luvs. This is the first time we've had a recurring problem like this. I'm going to switch to something else to see if it fixed the problem. My kid has enough troubles without this too.

If it IS Luvs, they will be hearing from me, as will the Consumer Products Safety Commission.

I always liked Luvs, not just for the price, but for the fit. Huggies always left gaps and leaked. Pampers was always more expensive, and because they own Luvs, I won't trust their diapers either. Store brands have always been terrible. I'm not sure what I'll do if it turns out to be the Luvs, except that I'll obviously have to bid them adieu with a swift boot.

Ok so my daughter has always used Huggies but I was tired of spending an arm and a leg to buy diapers so I switched to LUVS. Besides the high price of the Huggies, they also leaked worse than any diaper we have tried. Well it took a few weeks and my daughter (22mo) now has round red patchy rashes on her inner thighs and her bottom where the diaper (Luvs) is touching/rubbing. She is not doing good with potty training so I guess I will be forced to switch diapers again. UGH.

Yup, our twins have both developed a rash since we started putting Luvs on them a few days ago. This rash isn't responding to any normal rash medication either. We have dealt with yeast rashes with our twins, and even that medication doesn't seem to be making any change.
I don't think we will be using Luvs anymore!

I'm having the same problem. I have a newborn whose 3wks & 3d old. He has tons of pampers, but I didn't have time to go to my moms to go pick them up. I had luvs at home that somebody bought as a gift so I used those size 1. Well I took his diaper off yesterday & his bottom is red & he has these little sores. First I thought it was the Huggies wipes because I only use pampers wipes, but then I thought about it & something told me to come look online. I was skeptical about using luvs anyway, now that I know these diapers are the reason for his rash I WILL NEVER USE LUVS AGAIN!!!!!!... & I will be giving them a call.

My daughter developed Nasty hives on her rear end due to LUVS. They didn't have our usual brand at the store so we picked up some LUVS. BAD IDEA!! My poor kid is in so much pain. This company should be ashamed of themselves. I will never buy loves again and will share my experience with others.

It's funny, I realized it was the live diapers and started Google it and found this and many many other threads discussing that fact that luvs diapers are the cause of serious diaper rashes. My girlfriend brought some home boasting the amazing price. I am super cheap and thought it was wonderful also. Until that is, he developed a serious diaper rash shortly after switching. I prided myself on him never having had a diaper rash ever so I knew something was up. I change my baby probably 12 times a day, cause he wants to eat every hour and a half and pees shortly after every meal. So obviously diapers become a serious expense. Anyway, my poor 24 lbs 6 month old (fyi, I do not have a fat baby. He is actually pretty lean for a baby. He is not all foldy and has definition. I am a 285lbs natural body builder so i figured he would follow suit in being a beast.) Sorry, drifted a bit. My poor 6 month old got his first diaper rash ever and it was bad. I switched back to a name brand and the rash went away. Here is the kicker, ran out of diapers yesterday and had him wear the live again. A day later the rash is coming back. F luvs, whoever is responsible for this should have a broken neck. This should be criminal. I would have paid double name brand for this to not have happened.

Sorry everybody, I wrote the last comment and my phone kept correcting luvs to live. I am talking about luvs. They are absolutely horrible, I suppose you could buy them as a gift to someone you secretly hate for there baby shower. I am kidding, don't do that. No baby deserves such a rash. My babies was so bad I was scared people who saw it would think I was an unfit parent and cal. Cos on me. Really, though even if your baby isnt sensitive to luvs please still use a different brand. We can't allow this company to profit off of a dangerous product and an utter disregard for the safety of our reasons for living. Thank you.

my toddler is in size 4 and he didn't get a rash around his thighs but they turned green. The dye on the leg openings was staining his legs. I immediately stopped using and will be calling the company tomorrow.

My daughter is having the same issue now. She has been using Pempers until I bought Luvs which was onsale. I put it on her on the night, the daycare called in the next morning said she had rashes closed to the dipaer between of her legs. Since she was still using the pempers at daycare, the rashes looked lighter by the time I picked her up in the afternoon. Then I put Luvs to her on the time again, guess what, her leg, body are all red, even saw something rashes on her face, they are itchy. Now I am pretty sure it's the new luvs diapers. Got to return it. Is it why they were on sale?

I tried to save money by switching from Pampers to Luvs (size 4) for my 15 month old and now I feel like a horrible parent. My son's penis is irritated and he is visibly uncomfortable. I instantly made the connection and started researching b/c the only thing we changed was his diaper brand (not soap, diet). Just horrible...in the case of diapers - I guess you get what you pay for.

I have two kids a 13 month old girl and a 6 week old boy. I have always used huggies for my daughter as every other brand I have tried leak. Every time she went to sleep when she woke up her and the bed were soaked. When I had my son the hospital gave us a bunch of pampers and I was using them. Then when I had my baby shower we got a ton of newborn luv diapers. I started using them just to get rid of them (I have never liked luvs, but had never had a problem with their diapers besides leaking. I thought it was pointless to buy diapers when we had those and also have some size one huggies from the baby shower. Anyway, when I started using the loves on him he started getting really really red. All of a sudden his legs and stomach where the diaper goes were completely covered in a red blistery diaper rash. I have tried everything to get rid of it. I have used every cream and put baby powder on top of the cream to keep it from rubbing off. I started thinking it had to be the diaper so I opened the huggies size one diapers the other day and started using them. It is starting to get better now. I thought I would google and see if anyone else had the same problem with the diapers and was shocked as to how many threads I found with moms who were having the same issue with the diaper! I cannot believe they can sell a diaper that can hurt our precious babies like this. My son was in so much pain every time I used a wipe to wipe his butt, he would jump and whimper. I felt terrible that he had a diaper rash like that. Neither of my kids have ever had a bad diaper rash until I got the luvs. I still have one and a half packs of the stupid diapers and I refuse to put them on my child. I will be contacting luvs and giving them a piece of my mind. I know good and well it wasn't something I done. I am a good mother and wish I had known before I put the diaper on him so I could have avoided making him go through this. I wish no one would buy a single diaper from them and they would go out of business! They deserve it! I am sorry to all the moms who have gone through the same thing as I. I am still battling it now, and trying to get rid of the rash 100%. It was terrible it was blood red and looked like blisters had popped. I know if someone saw that rash they would have thought I was a bad mom. No innocent baby should have to go through that. Something has to be done!!

recently my husband brought home a box of luvs diapers size 4 since money is a little tight I decided to give it a try, what a huge mistake I feel so sorry for my baby he has the worst rash very red the skin feels like a burn rd blister he seems to be in so much pain he shakes every time I try to clean him with so much pain, he never got a rash before I thank god I got to this blog as I had my suspicion it was the new diaper and now I read from so many parents with the same problem, this brand should be taking off the market they are playing with our innocent's baby health shame on you luvs.

We just used luvs 4 diapers out of the box and mylittle boy (15 months) has blisters on his penis... hexs miserable switched to pampersandusing desitin and aquafor trying to help the little guy out... very upset with Luvs

My 11 month has had bad "diaper rash" around her labia and thighs for several weeks. She had been in Luvs since she was a newborn without any issues. Once we got in to the size three Luvs, the rash started to happen. Like many of you, it would not respond to desitin, A+D, butt paste, triple paste, vaseline, nystatin Rx cream, etc. We changed wipes, added diaperless time, changed foods, etc. Nothing worked. It would come and go, but never went away. When I finally realized that the rash was only occurring in areas that are in direct contact with the diaper (not down in the folds), it hit me that it might be a contact dermatitis (allergic reaction) thing. It never occurred to me that the Luvs could be doing it because she was in them ALL THE TIME since she was born. We just switched to huggies, so we'll see if that does the trick.

Bought a pack of Luvs today, size four, when I went to give my son his bath he had a huge burn on his back! I usually use target brand and love them, but was in a pinch and could not get to target. I will not be using them again. Was also reading on other blogs pampers are owned by same company. In guess in the future if I can't get my usual target brand I will get the Huggies!

My son is 4months has bloches on his stomach and looks like his privite is bleeched. He uses luv. I looked on the internet to see if luvs cause baby's skin to react like that and it does. Plus the chemicals that are in them aren't good for you're baby's skin at all. It can cause cancer to the baby which some people might not know about. So im getting my son naturally diapers that don't have any chemicals in them. Cuz that's what i think is right for my child

I am having the same problem. I have a six month old. I purchased Luvs Leak guard size 3 because they were on sale. The first thing I noticed that they were scented but it doesn't mention that on the product. My daughter has eczema on her face and I try to stay away from scented products. I used them anyway since we constantly change her diaper and diaper rash cream to protect her from diaper rash. The next day I noticed a rash. Not so bad, I used Destin and monitor the rash. A few days later the rash gotten worse. She now has a horrible rash on her genital and inner thigh where the diaper meet. I wasn't sure if it was the diaper. Now after reading the comments, I am certain that the Luvs is the problem and will be switching.

Our one yr old grandson hasn't had any diaper rash. To save money my daughter bought the new luvs diapers. Both times she tried them . he broke out in a really bad diaper rash. Go back to huggies and use diaper cream and in 2 days it's gone. Put a luvs diaper on him and in a day of wearing them he breaks out.

Infuriates me that this is happening to so many people and they still sale them and my son went thru a week of discomfort before I could figure out the problem
