Mommy's Big Day Out

Today I finally took Trevor out on my own for the very first time. I've been nervous about this, all I could imagine was him screaming from the minute we pulled out of the driveway. Since he easily goes from fussing to full-blown crying without sound this was just not an option. Most of the time, as long as we don't stop too long he is fine...so I just had to find a way to keep the truck moving and I thought I could at least handle that. I made sure he was fed, changed and a bit sleepy, strapped him in, took a deep breath and headed out the door.

We went to Wal-Mart first. We were doing fine until I had to wait at a stop sign for a couple of minutes, and he started to fuss. I quickly realized mashing the brakes repeatedly while sitting still is enough motion to keep him quiet. He did great through the store and I managed to get some things I needed. When I put him back in the car he was fine, but by the time I got around the truck and in the drivers seat, he was screaming. I turned on the radio, which did nothing so I hit the CD button and Nickelback started playing....the little face in my backseat mirror stopped screaming and he settled in. (We now know that he has his Daddy's taste in music...we'll have to dig out the Metallica CD's and try those next trip!)

Next we stopped at the movie store, which he enjoyed. Apparently rows and rows of DVDs are endlessly entertaining for a 6 week old. When I put him back in the car it was the same story as before--total meltdown by the time I could get my key in the ignition. I cranked up Nickelback and once again we were good to go. We got caught by a red-light and I thought I was in trouble, but was able to maneuver a right-on-red and avoided stopping for more than a second.

Now I was going to try something daring--going through the drive-through at Taco Hell. This could be tricky, especially since the idiots that work there take two hours at best to make a burrito. To my surprise, as long as the Nickelback CD didn't switch tracks, he was happy as a clam! He fell asleep by the time we got back to the house and napped in his car seat in the middle of the living room floor long enough for me to eat my quesadilla! BONUS!

So, if you happen to see a Ford pick-up driving through town with Nickelback blaring, making only right-hand turns and mashing the breaks at stop signs, smile and wave!!
